Priorities?

During the recent city council campaign, my opponent hammered on issues such as the drought and getting water from Randleman Lake, gangs and public safety, transportation, and costs of government -- frequently distorting the facts and/or my role in those issues along the way.

So now that she has won the election and is preparing to occupy the District 5 seat in early December, what has she turned her attention to?

According to reports from three different people today, Trudy Wade is working behind the scenes to gather five votes to remove the city manager's seat from the dais and down onto the floor where the other members of city staff sit during our meetings. [Explanatory note: Greensboro's city manager has traditionally been seated on the dais for as long as anyone can remember. That has certainly been the case during all 16 years and three city managers of my tenure on council.] Ms. Wade allegedly stated that a specific councilmember was going to vote in favor of this, but that councilmember says he/she has not even been contacted about it and in fact, opposes the idea.

Sigh! This sure sounds like deja vu' from her days as a county commissioner. Let's all hope this is not an indication of her true priorities and tactics for the next two years.

I believe she is referring to,
Mary Rakestraw? I know, trust me.

I knew this woman was up to no good when she was campaigning. I hope that the people will see her for what she is.

By the way, go to N&R Letters to the Editor. There are some comments made on your behalf about the way how the N&R "defended" you in the way WadeOff campaigned.

Read the responses that the letter writer deserved. You know who I am.

Anonymous,

I spoke directly the councilmember and know who it is -- it is not Mary R.

Thanks for your continued support!

You have missed my whole point!

I was not discussing the merits of "who should sit where." I was trying to point out that with all the REAL issues facing this city -- crime, need for economic development and jobs, transporation needs, the drought/need for water -- it seems totally ridiculous to be spending one's political energy on where the city manager should sit. In my opinion, this is a case of misplaced priorities.

Ok....You are right, and the residents of D5 are wrong.

No, only the ones who voted for my opponent! {grin}

Maybe the ones who voted for your opponent are looking for someone who can think for themselves when it comes to the city manager.Maybe if you would not have been so adament about taking his side on all the issues you just might have gotten re-elected.It is almost like you spoke without thinking. The mis-handling of the gpd fiasco is why you lost the election.Lots of folks in this town feel like David Wray was shafted on this issue. It is a shame you lost the election.I am sure you have done a great job on miost of the issues over the past years on the council.

I'm not willing to reignite the whole Mitch Johnson-David Wray debate yet AGAIN except to affirm that I truly believe Mr. Johnson did what any competent city manager would have done -- asked the police chief to investigate and explain allegations of wrongdoing in the GPD levied by a wide variety of people both inside and outside the department. The police chief appeared not to have addressed the issues appropriately. The city manager informed the police chief his responses were not sufficient and that he would be placed on administrative leave while further investigations were made. The police chief resigned. End of story!

I did not speak without thinking -- my opinions were formed from the evidence made available to me. I supported the manager's actions based on that information -- as did EVERY MEMBER OF THE GREENSBORO CITY COUNCIL. My position was no different from those of my fellow councilmembers.

Yes, I knew there were people in the community who have sided with David Wray and that my support for the city manager would cost me. I am not a person who says or does things for political expediency, saying what certain people want to hear, just to get elected/re-elected. Yes, maybe it cost me, but I have a clear conscience and can look myself straight in the mirror.

If your theory is correct, it's a real shame that the voters let this one issue overshadow my accomplishments which you referenced with your statement "I am sure you have done a great job on miost of the issues over the past years on the council."

But that's life -- so be it!

The only problem I have with who sits where is Trudy Wade being on the dais at all! Can we put her in a closet somewhere instead? *grin*
