Getting it right, Part 2
Amen, Allen Johnson! I just wish you had written this BEFORE the election! {smile}

My original focus for this blog was an attempt to keep citizens up to date on issues on the Greensboro City Council and other governmental bodies on which I formerly served, to provide more details so "the rest of the story" could be known. As my roles continue to change, so too will the content of this blog. Who knows what you find here next! You can contact me at scarmany@aol.com

If you think that Trudy's little cartoon about the water was the only thing that caused you to lose the election, you are living in "la la land". (smirk)
Several reasons you did not get my vote.
PROJECT HOMESTEAD
CONSTANT TAX AND FEE INCREASES
ECONOMIC INCENTIVES
WILLOW OAKS
BRYANT ELECTRIC
GPD/DAVID WRAY/UNDENIABLE SUPPORT FOR MITCH JOHNSON/LINDA MILES
“Based on the limited information available to me, I believe that most of the problems have been resolved.”
IF YOUR INFORMATION IS LIMITED, AS IS THE PEOPLE WHO ELECTED YOU, HOW CAN YOU BE SO SURE??
I'M NOT.
And neither were 1,903 other people.
Anonymous,
For heaven's sake, calm down, no need for SHOUTING!
No, I do not believe that Trudy's misinformation about the water situation was the only thing that caused my defeat. Every attack ad/flyer she put out contained similar distortions and/or misinformation -- I could dissect them chapter and verse and point out the untruths just as Allen J. did with the water issue. But for the trolls out there, the FACTS don't seem to matter, so would be a waste of my time and energy to debunk them at this point.
The problem is either that 1) Trudy deliberately distorted things, saying anything just to get elected, or 2) she had not done her homework and genuinely did not know (which several county staffers have confided in me as frequently being the case when she was a county commissioner). Either scenario does not bode well for Greensboro if this is going to be her way way of handling issues on city council.
It's obvious you and I disagree on several points and I'm likely wasting my breath her, but let's look at the issues you listed --
Project Homestead -- This one is really laughable since I was one of councilmember who frequently voted against PH projects. In fact, members of the the Simkins PAC heavily chided me for that non-support.
Tax and fee increases -- It's a fact of life that costs to provide services continue to rise -- higher utilities, more expensive fuel for city vehicles, employee salaries and benefits -- plus improved services citizens demand (more police officers) and facilities they approved in bond referendums (more libraries, parks, etc.)Yes, they have to be paid for.
Economic incentives -- Like them or not, look at all the new jobs and businesses in Greensboro because of the council's careful use of them. They are a return of the new business' taxes, not yours.
Willow Oaks -- City Council had nothing to do with this; police investigation found nothing worth pursuing. The work was done -- and similar conditions have been found on adjacent Willow Oaks sites that required much more work than originally anticipated.
GPD/Wray/Miles -- Every member of city council is on record as supporting the actions that have been taken on this matter. The problems have been identified and addressed -- the real problem is that too many people have swallowed the Rhino myths hook, line and sinker, and don't believe those answers. The former chief was not truthful to the city manager, he concealed or caused to be concealed potential evidence (the black book), and numerous problems occurred on his watch such as the ones that threatened the accredidation of our training academy. He did not act to correct the problems that were brought to his direct attention by numerous persons inside and outside the GPD. The city manager did take needed action -- get over it!
"concealed or caused to be concealed potential evidence (the black book)"
Sandy, by stating this book is potential evidence are you confirming your belief that David Wray used this book to racially discriminate against black officers?
And, have you seen the book?
Tony Wilkins
Greensboro
Tony,
"...are you confirming your belief that David Wray used this book to racially discriminate against black officers?"
Absolutely not! I have never said I believed David Wray racially discriminated against anyone. Please reread all my statements on this matter as well as my comment above -- my concerns are about him being misleading and not straightforward on a number of issues with the city manager, the city council, and the public. If you can't trust your police chief, who can you trust? That's the issue here.
Please also note that I used the word "potential" when I referred to this "evidence/black book." It may or may not have been significant in the overall picture (for example, did Wray even know of its existence prior to its discovery?), but the fact that he ordered it to be "secured" instead of immediately handed over to the city manager is extremely suspicious. If it was indeed just a routine line-up ID tool, then why not turn it over immediately?
No, I have not seen the black book. "How was it used" is the significant piece of the puzzle here and just looking at it isn't going to provide any answers there. I am hoping that question will get answered once and for all when evidence is presented during the upcoming trials of Sanders and Fox.
Bottom line, if YOUR boss had been asking you about an item of concern pertaining to your work and you suddenly found yourself in possession of it, what would you do -- say, "Oh look what I just found, is THIS what you are talking about?" or would you "secure it?"
There have been plenty of city employees over the years who have made mistakes, 'fessed up, and dealt with the problem and who retained their job. On the flip side, EVERYONE who was not truthful and/or tried to cover up found themselves without a job. I will remind you that Wray chose to resign rather than address the issues -- perhaps if he had been more forthcoming in his response, he would still be chief and we would not still be rehasing this over and over again.
Sandy, Perhaps you should stay tuned to the David Wray story. Hopefully soon you will see the big picture.I am surprised you feel this way about him.I am from the area you grew up in. David Wray also grew up in that area. I will say everyone from that area believes his side of the story. He comes from a great family. All you have to do is look at the facts.Do you think it is ethical for a cop to have a relationaship with a prostitute? These facts that were printed in the Rhino caused lots of voters to take sides.Iam not sure who is right or wrong. i would just like to see a list of all of the facts in this case. The rma report did not print all of the facts. It is the same with the news and record. They print what they want to print. All the voters ask for is all of the facts. Is that too much to ask for.I am not sure if Wade will be good for the district or not. Most politicians make promises to get elected.
Anonymous,
Please read what I posted on this blog on January 9, 2006 - (http://sandycarmany.blogspot.com/2006/01/sad-day.html
I still believe what I wrote then: "...However, as the investigation proceeded and more and more evidence came to light from numerous sources, it became increasingly clear that there were indeed things wrong within the administration of the police department that just could not be ignored. While it may be difficult to conclusively prove "who knew what and when" or whether actions were deliberate or oversights, the ultimate responsibility has to be placed on the man in charge, David Wray. While I believe him to be a good person at heart, being "a good person" does not guarantee that one will always use good judgment and make the best choices..."
I disagree your statement about "...facts that were printed in the Rhino..." -- in my opinion, those 'facts' as published there are twisted and differ significantly from much of the information I have seen. I hope someday that citizens will have the TRUTH on which to base their opinions.
I think most of the citizens are waiting on the truth to come out.Problem is they have been waiting too long.I would like to know the items you think are false that are printed in the Bledsoe series. We hear folks speaking about the lies in the rhino. What exactly are the lies? What do you think is true if anything that has been printed in the Bledsoe series?
"those 'facts' as published there are twisted and differ significantly from much of the information I have seen."
If those facts as published are so twisted and untrue, why has there been no legal action taken against the Rhino and Jerry Bledsoe? No legal action leads me to believe that the facts, as published, may not be all that "twisted."
"I hope someday that citizens will have the TRUTH on which to base their opinions."
That's all that the citizens have been asking for. The TRUTH.
Mitch has decided for the city that this information will not be released, and evidently City Council is going along with it.
Will we EVER know what the TRUTH is???
Anonymous,
At this time, I cannot correct the misinformation I believe to have been printed in the Rhino without illegally divulging protected personnel information that has not yet been authorized for release per state law.
Anonymous,
"...why has there been no legal action taken against the Rhino and Jerry Bledsoe?"
It will be up to any "aggrieved parties" to file any legal action against the Rhino/Bledsoe. You will have to ask your question of those individuals.
Just guessing, but if I were one of those persons, I think I would wait until the final installment is written so I would be sure of capturing everything that might have maligned me.
I expect the public to have a truer picture once the trials begin and the evidence is presented in court.
That is if the city council does not decide settle with the cops.I would not be surprised to see this happen. It will save a lot of embarrassments for the city leaders.
I had the criminal trials in mind with my statement, not the civil ones.
So you don't consider the City of Greensboro and the GPD to be "aggrieved" parties?
"No, I have not seen the black book. "How was it used" is the significant piece of the puzzle here and just looking at it isn't going to provide any answers there. I am hoping that question will get answered once and for all when evidence is presented during the upcoming trials of Sanders and Fox."
Please enlighten me as how the “Black book” will come into play in the Fox/Sanders criminal trial. You ooze of incompetence for what the truth really is, showing you are mentally feeble on the whole issue.
For what my amatuer, non-existent legal training is worth, it is my opinion the aggrieved parties with the greatest chance of success in a civil suit would be the officers whose personnel file details were illegally leaked and then published and whose reputations were potentially smeared by so-called "facts" that had already been disproven or unsupported by previous GPD internal investigations into the allegations against them.
Is it possible for us to have this discussion focused on the issues instead of insults and name-calling, please?
Since the criminal case is in the hands of the state, I don't have a clue as to what evidence may be presented in the trials (and would not reveal their strategy and undermine their case even if I did). Please note that I said I was HOPING that answers will come out.
Sandy,
The most important question here is you have been speaking of the so called "black book", and then some how brought Fox and Sanders trials into the conversation. What would there trials have anything to do with the so called black book? Did you not read and follow up on the charges/indictments against Fox and Sanders? These charges have nothing to do with the notorious black book anyway. So, please do explain this. Thanks so much.
Anonymous,
The SBI seized the black book as evidence during their investigation into the GPD issue and still have possession of the "black book." I thus am GUESSING that it may have some relevance in the pending court cases.
